Guest Blog post: Maggie Derry on brand photography.

The lowdown: Photography is a powerful tool for branding, creating immediate connections, evoking emotions, and setting your business apart. A single image can communicate your brand’s identity and build trust, faster than words ever could. In today’s digital world, where visuals dominate, the right images can make your brand memorable, relatable, and recognisable. From professional product shots to a standout headshot, investing in quality photography is key to telling your story and attracting your ideal audience. Don’t be bland—use visuals to elevate your brand!

Growler and Prowler Pets

When Sally and Emma asked me to guest write a blog about the importance of photography for branding I kept remembering the old saying that a picture is worth a thousand words and that couldn’t be more true!

Images communicate and convey so many things all at once which is exactly what makes them powerful. They can create a connection, provoke feelings, impact the senses, communicate ideas, tell a story, portray character and personality, the list goes on. Sometimes you can’t even articulate everything you ‘see’ in an image and why you’re drawn to it. Think how many times you see a photograph and it provokes a memory and through that memory a connection and a curiosity to find out more.

So why does that matter for a brand?

Everything an image can communicate is important to building a brand that resonates with your audience. The right images, used in the right way, will set you apart from your competitors, make your brand unique and memorable and help create:

1. Connection

2. Identity

3. Feeling and Memory

4. Trust

5. Relatability

6. Recognition

Why Visuals Speak Louder: The Power of Images in a Fast-Paced World

There’s also something about the immediacy of imagery, which is ever more important in the busy, fast paced world we live in. We’re constantly flooded with information so it’s important your images stand out and get you noticed by your ideal audience. Whilst there’s no denying the power of the written word, using that alone to create a brand can be incredibly bland (how well that rhymes!) It’d be a bit like searching for new trainers on the internet and only being able to go off the description alone. Who knows what you’d end up with! We can’t see it, so we don’t trust it.

So many of the buying decisions we make today are based on our reaction to an image - that’s what draws us in and makes us want to find out more. It doesn’t matter how long or detailed the description is when it comes to buying or investing in someone/something. You need to see what you’re getting and you need to feel a connection to it.

Put Yourself in the Picture: The Importance of a Professional Headshot

Last but by no means least, one of the most important images to have, as a business owner, is a photograph of you! It makes you memorable, connects you to your audience, makes you more relatable and helps you stand out from the crowd. People make an impression from an image in less than a second, so a professional headshot is a valuable investment to make!

Wrapping up

So, don’t be bland, invest in your brand and use images to communicate your story, create a connection, build enthusiasm, interest and attract your ideal audience.
